You haven't seen a Sphere of Light by any chance, have you? I'm looking for a Sphere of Light so I can make your world beautiful! -- Rainbow Brite tries to bargain with the crow at the start of the first half of Beginning of Rainbow Land.

Rainbow Brite is the Rainbow Brite franchise's main protagonist. She is a lovable, creative young girl who uses the colors of the Rainbow to bring peace and happiness to all. The character was voiced by Bettina Bush. She was later voiced by Emily Osment in the reboot.

Background[]

Rainbow Brite started off as a "forest spirit" named Wisp in 1982 before undergoing changes in both name and costume as she was developed at Hallmark. Originally focused on nature, the character eventually shifted to emphasize colors.

Her outfit transformed into cute moon boots paired with a matching dress, while her color belt was added later. The Color Kids also underwent changes to become the characters we know today.

Hallmark artist G.G. Santiago was responsible for creating Rainbow Brite's final appearance.

Personality[]

Though small in stature, Rainbow's good deeds and her magic acts with a Color Belt more than make up for her size. Initially she went by the name Wisp, before being granted the title Rainbow Brite. Rainbow Brite wields a magical tool called the Color Belt, which produces a powerful rainbow energy force in the form of a rainbow.

Rainbow Brite is carefree and fun-loving, but she does her work first. She might abandon a playful afternoon to save a sun-drenched wheat field from losing all its yellow or to save a rain-starved forest from losing all its green. She colors things by scattering the "Star Sprinkles", which become magical only when sifted through Rainbow's very own fingers. Along with her horse, Starlite, and her helpers, The Color Kids, Rainbow Brite brings hope and happiness to all.

Rainbow Brite is shown to have great determination, but even she can still fall victim to Murky Dismal's colour-draining toxins.

In the 2014 reboot, Rainbow Brite is portrayed as a bit of a ditz, though she still gets the job done.

Physical Appearance[]

Rainbow Brite has a blonde ponytail with a blue hairbow-scrunchie and blue eyes. She wears a rainbow-colored minidress (mostly blue with white trim) with matching gumboots, as well as white briefs. There are two versions of the dress: one with long sleeves (used in the original design), the other with rainbow-colored gauntlets instead of sleeves (used in Return to Rainbow Land).

Originally, Rainbow Brite looked like a child, and she had a red belt (the Color Belt) with something that resembled the Prankster Comets from Super Mario Galaxy, albeit with a golden star for a head and a rainbow-colored tail.

The Return to Rainbow Land adaptation makes her look like a teenager, and she has a rainbow-colored belt with a white star.

In the 2014 adaptation, she has the same belt design and looks more cartoony.

Return to Rainbow Land[]

Having retired as guardian of Rainbow Land, Rainbow Brite is now a normal teenage girl living with her family in a American suburbia. She still enjoys wearing multicolored clothing (usually with denim miniskirts), and works as a sketch artist. However, when the Dark Princess takes Rainbow Land by storm (in each sense), Tickled Pink and Moonglow seek out their old friend to help lead a resistance movement. Getting word of this, she decides to revisit her childhood identity, using her sorcerous abilities to overthrow the Dark Princess... while bringing color back to every corner of the universe.

Rainbow Brite is brought back for the 2014 series. While her role as the protagonist has not been changed, Rainbow Brite has become somewhat ditzy, and Stormy is no longer her friend. They were friends prior, however, but Stormy was led astray due to a falling out, whereupon she joined the Dark Princess. Rainbow Brite is eventually able to rekindle her friendship with Stormy after the Dark Princess strikes directly. After she re-befriends Stormy, Rainbow Brite tries to help the Color Kids be friends with the latter, but the first attempt fails as Red Butler, Patty O'Green, and Buddy Blue flee. Regardless, with help from Rainbow Brite, Stormy is able to re-befriend the Color Kids.

Rainbow Brite is no longer able to summon Rainbow whips as in previous incarnations, but she gains a new ability in the form of shooting colorful lasers, in a similar manner to how Rockman from the Rockman franchise uses his Rock Buster.

Trivia[]

  • Rainbow Brite was originally a Hallmark card, or rather a character from such a card.
  • Rainbow Brite underwent the biggest design change from the classic series to the 2014 series.
